Workshop Description:
Make a rounded spine cloth-bound book with bitter melon bindery! Learn the case binding method of making a hardcover book, where the book block and hardcover case are built separately, then adhered together.
This binding is excellent for making your own journal or sketchbook. All levels are welcome. We will be handling sewing needles, utility knives, and using some of our wrist and forearm strength for cutting.
About the instructor:
Chanel Ly (she/her) is a bookbinder, author, and librarian-in-training. She created bitter melon bindery in 2017 when she discovered the irresistible beauty of washi (traditional Japanese paper), which became a signature element of her handmade journals and sketchbooks. Her YouTube channel has garnered over 180K subscribers, where she shares her craft process through tutorials and ASMR videos. Her beginner how-to guide, Handmade Books at Home, was published in 2023. In the past few years, her bookbinding practice has expanded into fine binding and book conservation as she advances her skills with the American Academy of Bookbinding and UCLA Library. She is the current chair of the Guild of Book Workers California Chapter, where she continues to uplift the bookbinding craft and community, and hopes to get more people excited about bookbinding!
